This is a blog post about watching a low budget horror movie called Deranged. Click the link to read the full post. It doesn't matter if you've never seen or heard of this movie before because it's not like suddenly nobody will know what it's about. It's just that I haven't written more than one sentence about it and I feel obligated to write more than that if I want people to pay attention. If you're interested, go ahead and click over and read my review of an "Another Korean Horror" article by avid horror connoisseur Steve Niles who shares some thoughts on this film as well as his appreciation for Asian cinema in general... I wouldn't go as far to say that I hated it, but I was greatly disappointed by Deranged. The producers seem to have tried to make a movie that's much more slick and polished looking than the typical low-budget B-movie, but in doing so they took away all of the charm and much of the coolness too. This film is tedious and boring because characters are mostly one dimensional and throwaway. This is particularly evident in the first half hour or so where all you really see are scenes of police officers grilling their suspects one by one. Then you see similar scenes with different characters in which they ask questions about events that happened weeks earlier. That's what the movie is mostly about. You won't see much in the way of special effects, no scares, no laughs, nothing to get you emotionally involved with the characters. The movie also lacks tension because it seems like nobody knows what they're doing or how to do it right. There are some good ideas here and there, but you have to dig around for them if you want to find them. I did enjoy it when one of the main characters goes nuts and starts killing all of his fellow students. But I don't know if that was supposed to be funny or if it was just bad timing on my part since I thought that scene was supposed to be serious. By the way, I found out this was a remake of a Japanese film so maybe it's better to watch that one instead of this one. I also loved how Niles seemed to have a love-hate relationship with Asian cinema. He admires many of the great kung fu movies from back in the day, but he complains about the lack of originality in modern Asian horror films. In direct contrast with HFK, I actually loved this movie when it first came out several years ago when I was in college. I loved Japanese horror movies and when you consider that most Japanese horror movies are actually remakes themselves...like Ring is a remake of Ringu...then this is clearly a remake... it's all just a big circle. It's not a bad movie...but it's not a great movie either.
